That’s why I planted 24 cherry tomato plants last year. Overkill, huh? But didn’t I just say they taste like candy and are nutritious. The yield? The average was 3 to 4 pints per plant. Some plants easily produced 5 pints. I love cherry tomato plants because they just keep on producing all summer right into fall.
Math quickie: 24 plants x 3 pints x $2.00 (lowball tomato price) = $144
$144 savings – $8 (cost of tomato plants) = $136 total savings
Math quickie: 24 plants x 3 pints x $3.50 (todays price) = $252
$252 savings – $8 (cost of tomato plants) = $244 total savings
And these tomatoes don’t reflect the price you’d pay for organic which is quite a bit higher.
Unlike me, you could also plants seeds (hopefully you have seeds already going!) and will save that cost of the plants as well.
Now you’re thinking to yourself, hmmmm, don’t think I could even use that many tomatoes. Well, pass them along to family, friends and neighbors; they will love you! And cherry tomatoes make that perfect neighborly peace offering.
And you’d be surprised. During the summer months, we eat zucchini six weeks straight. Although Tom starts to balk after week four. Then you can just sheepishly haul your zucchini baseball bats to the front yard with a “free” sign.

Like many things, gardening takes practice. Plants will require regular watering, maintenance and harvesting. Growing many different vegetables in a large garden can be overwhelming for new gardeners and can ultimately lead to failure. Limit yourself to just a few types of vegetables the first year. When you become more confident in your abilities and resources, you can increase the size of your vegetable garden and grow a wider variety of crops.
