Comfortable & easy gardening with Backyard Boxes!

Imagine living in a world where you can have your cake and eat it too.

Owning an elevated garden bed from Backyard Boxes does just that. No bending over! The most convenient and comfortable gardening possible. If you are between 3 and 103, you will love this garden bed.

This elevated garden bed is 4-feet-long and roughly 2 feet wide. Plenty of room for flowers or veggies!

Its 16-inch depth is still deep enough for a few cherry tomato plants if that’s your goal. Imagine plucking fresh candy-like cherry tomatoes just feet from your door.

An elevated garden bed that stands 30″ tall in total. So whether you are planting or plucking produce, one never has to stoop. A waist level garden.

As I grow (ahem) older….I realize how nice it is to have a dedicated gardening spot that doesn’t break the back or stresses aching knees.

No one should give up the joy of gardening because they aren’t as mobile as they used to be. What a great gift for grandma and grandpa!

Quality control – let’s talk about materials and technique!

Backyard Boxes handcrafts their Elevated Garden Boxes from 100% untreated, dried cedar.  Cedar is a very rot and insect resistant wood making it last much longer than other wood gardens would.

There’s a reason that Biblical King Solomon built his temple out of cedar wood. Only the best for a king.

A liner is included with the garden bed to help retain the soil. It also has bottom boards for this same purpose but includes gaps for drainage, preventing plants from getting waterlogged and the wood from rotting.

Each elevated garden bed starts with an external frame made from 2″ lumber. To create the sides, 1″ thick boards are inserted into the frame to increase stability and support against outward soil pressure. And thick wood lasts longer. Period.

Overlapping panels help the side walls resist soil pressure and reduce bowing and warping of the wood over time, they also help make sure soil cannot spill out between boards.

If you’ve ever attempted to make wood garden beds, you might have experienced the “bulging sides” of a homemade effort. Not good!

Backyard Boxes utilizes old-world techniques with quality materials for a product that functions just as good as it looks. Sleek modern farmhouse design!

Assembly process of the elevated garden bed

Backyard Boxes products are shipped flat in a box. This elevated garden bed has four already fully assembled sides needing to be bolted together. The whole assembly process takes 5 minutes. Easy peasy.

Fewer parts, including hardware, simplifies the process. Only 8 bolts and 8 washers are required. The only tool needed is a 7/16 socket wrench, but a drill speeds up the process. You still might want to hand tighten.

Backyard Boxes also put out an excellent 7 minute assembly video. Highly recommend! The biggest takeaway is that you will assemble the product upside down and turn it over when finished.

When you flip the bed right side up, evenly lay down the bottom boards on the attached rails. Two boards have cutouts so they fit tightly around the posts. The other 9 slats are straight.

Leave an even finger space between the slats to allow water to escape. Not only will this keep plants from getting waterlogged, but trapped water does make wood (even cedar!) rot faster than it should.

Last, staple the fabric to the sides of the bed. Or, the weight of the soil holds the fabric in place equally well if you choose not to staple it. Just make sure the fabric goes corner to corner.

The elevated garden bed is a customizable process

Perhaps the best feature of Backyard Boxes is how incredibly customizable their products are.

Choose a size, length, width, and depth suitable to your planting needs and requirements.

Most annuals and veggies will be fine with a depth of 12″ but other plants such as tomatoes will prefer that 16″ depth for those roots to roam.

You also must decide if you’d like a 3 ft, 4ft, or 5th length. It depends on usage and weight. Smaller sizes are easier to move, but a larger length will allow for more plants. It’s totally up to you!

Perhaps the best solution is to order two elevated beds, one to create an Italian garden and the other for salsa night.

In the first bed, grow a few tomatoes, basil, and oregano. And the second bed you could grow a few onions, cilantro, Jalapeños, serranos, or habaneros to add heat.

Either way, plenty of room to dream!

Style, stain, and shipping of the elevated garden bed

It’s a no-brainer that this sleek and sophisticated elevated planter will elevate your style.

Easy on the eyes and easy on the wallet. You can have one for roughly $300. Not bad for a planter you’ll use for many years to come.

To keep your garden organic, Backyard Boxes only uses non-toxic stains from Vermont Natural Coatings. No one wants chemicals from the stain to leach into the soil and into the food grown in that soil.

There are seven colored stain choices to select from, I find Garden Green and Autumn Red to be particularly attractive.

Since the cedar wood is untreated, you also have the option of going with a clean stain. This is a good plan because over time, even the best wood wears down and the clear stain will slow that process down.

I was surprised how quickly the product was shipped. I blinked and here it was on my doorstep! Ready to be planted in. Let the dreaming begin!

Last tips for the ultimate gardening experience

Fill your bed with compost, topsoil, and potting soil. I splurged and used potting soil exclusively, adding a bit of perlite.

But buying potting soil in bags is pricey. It can be found cheap on FB marketplace if you’re willing to look. Tom bought me a pallet of potting soil last year for $1 a bag. I’m still glowing.

This is partly why I appreciate garden boxes/garden beds so much. One can control the exact environment the plants grow in, unlike planting directly into the ground.

If you want produce that is 100% organic, you can have it with Backyard Boxes!

Fertilizing once a week with fish emulsion and adding nutrients to the soil will get those plants lush and flush budding with vegetables.

I’ll plant three cherry tomato plants and a few basil plants in my elevated garden. Then I can pluck a few tomatoes feet from my doorstep.

When the weather warms up, I promise to share my pictures in this elevated garden bed. Cross your “green fingers” for me! Until then, Happy Spring you all!

I would love to plant flowers, several easy to maintain. I also would love to grow some fruits and vegetables. I have grown blueberries, squash, cantaloupes, watermelons, grape tomatoes in the past. I let a a few grape tomatoes go bad, then squish the seeds and plant them on my deck so the rabbits, birds and deer can’t get to them. The squash got very big. I save lots of seeds and plant them. I saved the seeds from Sunflowers and planted them the next year. Since I have a septic tank, I can’t put things down the sink, so I compost a lot of food waste, like egg shells, banana peels, etc. I live on several acres of land, with lots of woods, lots of deer (over 20-30 can be in my yard in the morning), rabbits, wild turkeys, etc. Every year my little hummingbird come back to the tree at my bedroom window. He was late coming last year.

I have always wanted a raised garden bed or large planter. I think this one would help my veggies and plants survive the deer. I have about 15 or more Crape Myrtles in white, dark pink and lite pink. They are pretty easy to maintain. I have different varieties of them as well. I had a Pink Dogwood, but someone ran over it and killed it.

I would love a place to grow strawberries and maybe mint. I am not a great gardener and we live in a desert so it’s hard to keep plants going. Strawberries and mint plants tend to take over beds so a planter is ideal.
