Potluck dinner

Any guess on what’s inside?

Now is the time of year where many people gather for potlucks. Churches, workplaces, friends and family. What’s your take on potlucks? Do you love the unknown? Trying something you’ve never tried before? Eating something you may or may not enjoy? Does the number of dishes excite you or scare you?
For me my view changed several years ago when almost every single person at this particular dinner got the stomach flu or food poisoning from the event. I understand that we can’t live in a bubble and I’ve heard if you’ve ever worked in the back of a restaurant it’s hard to ever go out to eat. again But I’ll save that for another blog.

Potluck. It’s interesting that the word luck is right in there. I feel like it’s Russian Roulette. How do you increase your odds? Who has cats? Dogs? Ever find hair in the food? How well you know the person? Little kids/helpers? My wife made Christmas cookies with our girls a few weeks ago. Esther, 2, was told I don’t know how many times, “do not touch until we are done.” Those little fingers kept poking away every time you turned your back. If she wasn’t mine there’s no way I’d want to eat some of those cookies. (So yes, Laura doesn’t let the girls work on any cookies that leave the home, she’s 100% in charge of those.)

When I was student teaching in an elementary school I was still pretty young and naive. “This is great!” Every time a kid has a birthday they are bringing in goodies! I saw my cooperating teacher say, “oh, thank you they look lovely.” After the kid left his office, right into the garbage. He said, “trust me you don’t want to be eating things that little kid’s have made.

I witnessed a friend of mine whisper to his wife. “What did you bring again? Because that’s all I’m eating” at a potluck we attended. This is because many people simply don’t trust the potluck. And maybe this is because we all have different standards. I mean, we sterilize our countertops before we cook anything. This is because we have too! We have a bad cat who will jump on the countertop when we are not looking and to prepare food on these same countertops when the cats been up there is gross. But someone else may not even think or realize their cats been up there.

Look. I understand that we are very fortunate to even have the opportunity to have enough to eat every day and clothes on our back. This season always reminds me of what’s really important. I just think it’s really interesting.

Oh yeah, and our church had its annual holiday dinner a few weeks ago. And of course Laura had to be the one to witness a young girl sticking her hands in the fruit bowl my mom brought. She dug deep in, ate a few pieces and dug back for more. I’m trying not to judge, but you know, wasn’t too hungry for fruit after that. Even worse, I’ve seen plenty of adults pick in the fruit bowl with their bare hands. It’s like, um, how about getting a bowl because the stomach flu has been going around and um, if you’re a carrier of the sickness, we’re all gonna get it? Or at least stab with a fork cause if you’re sick, now we’re all sick.
