Since guinea pigs are social, I got two as they were bonded brothers. One is all white, the other mostly black; she aptly named them Salt and Pepper.

Eyes on the prize – the size!

When choosing a pet, even multiple pets, the size of the enclosure is vital. It can’t be too big or too small. This hatch boasts 7.6 square feet of living space, ideal for two Guinea pigs living together.

Our two new friends also needed a secure indoor place to live. A spacious hutch that would contain them in our house and keep our curious cats and dogs away from them.

We recently added a kitten to our menagerie. “Tiger” is very curious, but the guinea pigs simply don’t appreciate his interest and prefer to be left alone.

Salt and Pepper view Tiger as a predator, so they like the haven of their new chateau. The doors can be opened and closed with a latch that secures tightly when shut.

The white metal bars are spaced so tightly together that the cat can’t get his paw near the piggies. Guinea pigs don’t want to play with the kitten. End of story!

And the chateau feels like a mini house, with two separate living areas. Two-thirds of the hatch is light and bright for daytime activities.

The last third is a more private den, perfect for naps and nighttime rest. There’s no “windows”, making it darker and a more secure feeling for the pets. Each section has its own latch for easy access.

Assemby

The product shipped flat, so you will have to assemble it. It comes with a paper instructional manual that includes pictures but no text.

As with any assembly project, lay out all the pieces to check for missing or damaged parts. This way, you can notify the company as soon as possible if an issue arises.

Their website has links to assembly guides, videos, and other helpful info if needed.

The paper manual was more than adequate, with a step-by-step guide with detailed pictures. The parts are all carefully labelled.

With only 8 steps to reach completion, the chateau will only take about 20 minutes to put together. No tools are required.

It’s really just a matter of holding the parts and putting the bolts in. But an extra set of hands might be helpful!

Materials matter!

I love ECOFLEX®, the material the Cozy Critter Chateau is crafted from. It’s an innovative composite of new and recycled materials, including reclaimed wood fiber by-products.

To the touch, it feels like a hard, but smooth plastic. So it cleans easily. But the material is also moisture-resistant, which cuts down on odor.

The chateau, bird house, and bird feeder in this post are all made from Ecoflex.

I’m sure most of you reading this post can appreciate this green technology! It’s good for pets and the planet. Eco-friendly and sustainable.

No wooden structure could last this long or conceal pet odors as well. Besides, pet urine is intense…and would seep into the wood, causing unpleasant smells.

Ecoflex easily wipes clean with a rag and some mild dish soap.

How to clean

Guinea pigs eat nonstop. This also means they poop nonstop. Tiny little poop pellets that are great fertilizer in your garden! But I digress.

An enclosure that is simple to clean is essential. To cut down on unpleasant odors, any animal hutch will require a weekly deep-clean. But I do a mini spot-clean nearly every day to keep the chateau fresh.

The frequency of cleaning depends on the type of animal, bedding, and number of pets housed in the Cozy Critter Chateau. Since I have two Guinea pigs, this enclosure needs more attention to cleaning than if there were only one pet.

The ECOFLEX® material makes the enclosure super easy to clean. Like a soft plastic, many spots just get sprayed with a mild dish soap and a rag or a few paper towels.

But the icing on my cake is the three separate doors this chateau boasts for cleaning purposes. The doors open and shut with a simple-to-use latch. This gives easy access to all the parts of the cage for simpler cleaning.

The three doors also make adding hay, pellets, and fresh produce a quick and effortless process.
