Just Say No. I have a hard time doing that when there’s ice cream, cookies, fried dough, or pizza & wings sitting in front of me. So yes, my will power with food is not very strong. And my dogs seem to have the same problem. They would eat nonstop if we let them eat freely so it’s probably a good thing we measure their food at each meal. I’d be better off if someone measured my food for me, then I couldn’t overeat.
Anyhow, every dog owner knows chocolate is poisonous for dogs. A couple of years ago on the day before Valentine’s Day I got my wife a pound and a half of sponge candy. I had it gift wrapped and hidden in one of my bags. We went out for a bite to eat and when we got home… paper everywhere. I immediately knew the dog had found the candy! Not only did the dog destroy my Valentine’s Day gift but I also had an emergency veterinarian visit that night. (He was fine, he had what is called a food bloat and honestly, I think I get those too). It’s when you eat too much food at one sitting and your stomach swells a bit. I was furious with that dog. Looking back I realize that I am just like that dog.
The cat? Total opposite. We leave his bowl filled 24/7 and he never overeats. Unlike the dogs, he’s a free-eater. So either he doesn’t like food the much or he has more will power than myself and the dog.
If I were a dog. My master would decide with a rational mind how much I should eat on a given day and how much exercise I would get. FYI. If you got a fat dog it’s not his fault. I ran a 5K on Memorial Day. My parents have a 1-year-old lab that ran alongside. She didn’t have a choice, she was going to run the race with me.
So tomorrow I go to the lab and get those dreaded numbers. If my report card fails I can safely say, “I’d be better as a dog.”
