A quick note before we get started….

You’ll see the selection and order of plants in the Florafelt planter changed for different photos in this post.

I wanted to highlight how the planter kit could  look staged various ways. So plants were changed and re-arranged for photography purposes.

Many thanks to Garden Goods Direct who without their luscious plant selection none of this would have been possible. The plants in this post were graciously supplied by them. You don’t need me to rave on about how beautiful these plants are!

I am severely limited to what I can purchase plant-wise at the local garden centers this time of year. What they have in stock is half-dead because light is limited and the temperatures are cold.

And you can guess the status of the indoor plants at the big-box stores. Hello neglect!

So I am grateful to Garden Goods Direct for sending me plants that exceeded my expectations on every level.

Truly, their “luxury” plants made this plant wall  come vibrantly alive. A lackluster wall in my home went from boring to extraordinary with lush green vegetation.

Garden Goods Direct is an online seller of high quality plants. You will not be disappointed in their selection or quality. Their 6-inch potted plants are gigantic for  immediate satisfaction.

In case you were wondering….

If you’d like to purchase any plants you see in this post from Garden Goods Direct be sure to check out the captions for names!

How the Florafelt Compact Living Wall works in a nutshell

If using indoors, mount the folded pocket planter to the wall. Use the included two wall mollies and 2 L hooks for this purpose. Hang your planter on the hooks.

Choose at least 8 plants (one for each pocket). Gently fold plants in root wrappers and place snuggly at the bottom of each pocket.

Each pocket is big enough for one 6-inch pot sized plant or 2-3 plants 4-inch in size or smaller.

Use the indestructible recycled P.E.T. plastic felt root wrappers to shelter the plants and enclose dirt and water. Tie with included rubber bands.

Not only do root wrappers make this kit the cleanest vertical garden ever, but roots have space to grow and expand into the moist inner layer of the felt root wrappers.

A drip line waters the unit automatically. Fill the included three gallon bucket about once a week.

Starting at the top of the unit, moisture wicks down through the felt to water all eight pockets finally dripping back into the bucket starting the process all over again.

The pump is submerged in the tank and is the mechanism that pulls the water to the top of the unit again.

The front of the unit stays dry and will not drip on your floor although it doesn’t hurt to have a tray underneath the tank.

A timer is included with your kit that allows you to control when and how often to water. For indoor use only.

How easy is that?

Plants on Walls creates highly customizable kits!

Perhaps what I appreciate most about the Florafelt vertical garden kit is its versatility.

Plants on Walls makes numerous kits in varying shapes and sizes; the kit I was sent to review has 8-pockets vertically climbing upward. This is the same kit you can win!

But Plants on Walls also boasts the Florafelt 12-pocket and Florafelt 4-pocket green wall. Create any size vertical garden by stacking planters.

So even though the focus of this post is vertical gardening in a primary home residence, it would be negligent of me not to mention that the Florafelt kits are spot-on perfect for any office building.

You can go as big or small as your dreams allow.

And your co-workers will never have to draw straws as to whose turn it is to water the plants. The automatic recirculated watering system has your back.

The tank can be customized with a welded 18 gauge stainless steel unit for ultimate modern chic office style. Choose from standard finishes including brushed stainless, satin natural, textured black or gloss white.

As your plants grow, they absorb toxins and release clean, fresh oxygen. Just what your office building needs!

Florafelt is hypo-allergenic, moth-proof, mildew and odor-resistant and contains no irritants or carcinogens.

It is both chemical and water resistant.

Root Wrapping is a riot!

So what do you do for fun? As for me, it’s root wrapping.

Kind of like putting a diaper on a plant.

The directions suggest root wrapping in the box your vertical garden kit comes in and I heartily agree. I planted in the box on my dining room table (it’s not like we ever actually eat there!) and the box helped cut down on dirt spillage.

The eight root wrappers come with eight rubber bands that you will most definitely want to use. Otherwise, I don’t see how the root wrappers would stay together.

It’s possible to opt out of using the root wrappers (and this would give you more planting space in the pocket as they do take up a bit of room.)

But I wouldn’t advise it. The root wrappers not only contain soil and water but prevent air gaps. Root wrappers also make adding and removing soil easy.

Plus if and when you choose to re-arrange the plants, you can just pull the root wrapped plant out of the pocket hole and place the plant in it’s new pocket with no mess.

However, you should decide quickly if you want to move the plants around. Don’t wait until the roots have grown through the felt. They will get upset when moved.

And rest assured, roots will grow through the felt preventing root binding. Plants breathe using the root wrappers which is better for both the soil and the roots.

Switching the plants around with root wrappers was a breeze and cut down on dirt spillage to a bare minimum.

Planting tip!

Definitely stretch open the felt pockets prior to planting the root wrapped plants or they might not easily fit.

Reach in each pocket with your fist and stretch open as much as you can. You want to create a little room for soil for all the good microbiology it provides.

Or use the handle of a hammer for leverage to make stretching a whole lot easier.

How the Florafelt Garden Kit lets your creative juices flow!

Now the fun begins!

Plant selection took some time to find just the look I was going for, plants with leaves in varying textures, hues, patterns and sizes. The end result left me breathless!

And that’s just another reason root wrappers rule. I was able to change the order of the plants from 1-8 (I highly advise planting from the bottom working your way up) a few times until I nailed it.

Root wrappers = zero mess.

Finally, I settled on the starfish snake plant on top. It looks like a kingdom up there!

The 3 gallon tank provided is the perfect size to water the plants, but wasn’t high enough off the ground for me.

I wanted my garden to be about 12 inches higher, mostly because I hoped the bottom plant (the jade pothos) would receive more light than it would have gotten being only about 15 inches off the floor.

And I was insistent on that starfish snake plant to be closest to the ceiling for a  dramatic topper.

The white enclosure box was built by Tom (okay mostly his dad!) who made me a white wood  box enclosed in vinyl to house the tank. I am thrilled to the gills.

The unit is now 27 inches off the ground. It rests equally between the floor and the ceiling.

Nothing wrong look-wise with the tank~  but it’s black and I wanted white to blend in  with the wall. And I didn’t want to paint the plastic tank.

The end result is just what I dreamed of!

A note on the Florafelt self-watering system….

Tom and I are drip system obsessed. But our experience thus far has been limited to outside drip systems.

This is our first indoor self-watering system. And there’s no going back. It’s fabulously efficient! All I have to do is top off the three gallon tank roughly once a week.

Due in part to gravity, the plants on the bottom tend to get more water than the ones on top. Plant accordingly!

So the jade pothos and the peace lily are nestled in the bottom pockets. They don’t mind being consistently wet whereas that starfish snake plant isn’t having it. Overwater it and it will die.

If you really want to fuss and hand water, it’s possible to disconnect the system and exclusively water by hand.

But this I was unwilling to do. I quickly discovered I could accommodate plants with different water needs simply by changing up the soil/planting medium to suit them.

For example, the starfish snake plant and the staghorn fern both were planted in orchid bark chips to aid drainage. I also placed them as the top two plants so they’d get the least water.

The Swiss cheese vine got cactus and succulent potting mix while the crocodile fern was given specialized  African violet potting mix. Spoiled plants!

And you can buy a Florafelt wall unit minus the drip irrigation if you wish. The price is a tad lower, too.

Did you know? According to NASA, using certain houseplants and placing one every hundred square feet can remove up to 87% of air toxins in 24 hours!

Picture

A note on lighting….

First choose the location making sure the unit gets plenty of light and then select plants you love. Plants you’ll get to look at vertically for ultimate plant enjoyment!

If light is an issue for you, you might want to consider adding some halogen or metal halide spot lights.

I was fortunate in placement and found a spot that receives tons of bright, but indirect light for my low-light loving plants. No direct sun ever! They are happy as can be.

Location for me was a Southern wall across from a windowed wall. Tons of indirect light is reflected here.

Plant selection is equally vital. Choosing non-fussy, low-light indoor plants is probably best for the Florafelt kit.

Garden Goods Direct has a vast selection of plants to meet the needs of your living plant wall.

Best of all? You won’t have to wait a million years for your plants to get to a size where you really enjoy them.

Garden Goods Direct plants are humongous. Their 6-inch pots will leave you swooning with delight. Plants are even nicer than their stock photos reflect.

Healthy, vibrant plants with gigantic and thriving root systems. It was a joy unwinding the roots in the root wrappers to kick-start their new life.

Final thoughts

I can’t help reiterating how pleased I am with my new living green wall.

It’s the most fun I’ve had in a long time~ from plant selection to root wrapping to marveling over it’s beauty.

If you decide to tackle a similar project, I have no doubt you will equally enjoy the process as much as I did!

While there are plenty of vertical gardening options on the market today, I don’t know of any other that is less messy or more efficient and versatile.

The root wrappers are incredible! They do the job they were born to do!

Prior to installation, my biggest concern with the Florafelt system was that you’d mostly see black felt with tiny plants poked in. Not too attractive.

Reality?

You barely see the felt planter at all, it’s mostly covered up by lush, exotic plants. Form marries function in a green urban jungle.

Perhaps the biggest compliment I’ve gotten is from my cat. He sits adoringly in front of this green wall just staring at it. For hours on end. What more is there to say?

You will have zero regrets with the Plants on Walls Florafelt system. Pure plant perfection.

Did you know? The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the average American spends a whopping 93 percent of their lives indoors! Time for a plant wall!
