Boring backyards and what to do about them

There’s a load of reasons why you might not spend much time in your backyard. Those people who aren’t very green fingered often close the door and never look back.

Other people may work too many hours to spend any real time here. Others again may find their outside space too overlooked. And then, there are those who don’t go outside because they find their backyards boring.

You know how it goes; you open the curtains, and you wish you could shut them straight up again. There’s nothing wrong with your bare patch of lawn or your paved outside area.

It’s just that they don’t exactly fill you with excitement. They’re like a spare room with grey walls and bland furniture. They serve the purpose, but you wouldn’t necessarily choose to spend time there.

This is a common problem, especially among owners of new build houses. Often, the backyards of these are blank canvases for owners to make their mark on.

If you haven’t gotten around to that yet, it should come as no surprise that you find the space pretty uninspiring. The trouble is, this is a vicious cycle.

You don’t spend time out there because you find the area boring, but you can’t add interest if you don’t spend time there. Do you see, now, why this is a problem?

Lucky for you, it’s time to put a stop to it now. All you need to do is consider the following ways you could finally get excited about your yard.

Add interesting features

If you’re willing to go for a complete redesign, consider how you can use this to add interest. Yards which are all on one level are pretty uninspiring, so why not build a portion of raised decking?

You could even go all out and invest in a swimming pool to break up the greenery a little. With one or two additions like these, you could find that your outside area becomes a sight of real interest.

You may also find that additions like these mean that you can’t get outside fast enough. A lot of the time, it’s easier to do projects like these yourself than you might think.

Even if you don’t feel up to the task, professionals like those from Unique Companies can offer and apply a whole variety of interesting landscaping concepts like these for you.

Before you know it, your exterior space will be as much of a feast for the eyes as your interiors are.

Play with color

If there’s no color to note in your backyard, it’s no wonder you don’t much get excited by its appearance. Green is great and all, but one flat expanse of green lawn does not an inspiring garden make.

Lucky for you, this has a ridiculously easy fix. Our yards, after all, are fantastic places to get stuck in with flowers. And, what do flowers bring? Color, of course, and lots of it.

That’s why you should incorporate plants outside as much as possible. A great way to do this would be to dig a border of flower beds around your lawn. To make sure this is as effective as it can be, you should plant various flowers.

A quick bit of research can show you which colors you can expect from which bulbs. You could then either color coordinate or go for a mixed effect. Either way, this is sure to brighten that greenery up a little.

Even if you have a paved garden, you can still incorporate plenty of variety here by making use of potted plants.

You could also include colored pots to ensure you get the full benefits here. After that, you can bet looking out your window will be a much more pleasant experience.

Don’t be afraid to accessorize

It’s also worth noting that you shouldn’t be afraid to accessorize. Consider that a room in your house would look predictably bland if you didn’t include a few accessories to jazz it up.

Well, the same rules apply in your yard. You needn’t go all out with landscaping to add interest if you don’t want, but you do need to consider accessories. What you choose here is really down to you.

It may be that you’re happy with little more than a few garden ornaments and a bird table. Or, you may want to go all out with a fire pit or a water fountain. Either option could make this space far more interesting than it is right now.

How could you improve your backyard?
