A well-groomed backyard does not just please the eye- it invigorates you. Investing in your landscape improves your mood by creating an area to kick back, relax and enjoy the seasons as they come and go. You want to spend more time out of doors…..right?! Although many of us tend to have big dreams when it comes to decorating or remodeling our backyards, not all of us have a humongous budget to work with. Minor tweaks  can seriously enhance the overall appeal of your backyard, you just have to put in a little sweat equity. With spring on the horizon, now is the perfect time to start thinking about tiny and inexpensive changes you can make to your backyard to improve that space. With these small but powerful tips and tricks, you can give your backyard a budget friendly makeover with not too much effort.

1. Espaliered Trees for Decor

Want an instant high-end look for your backyard? Try espaliering trees. This traditional horticulture practice is a quick way to add visual appeal and extra texture to plain walls, all the while being easy on the wallet. Also, espaliered trees are easy to maintain and last a long time.

2. Recycling Household Items

Here is a creative hack that will make your lawn more artistic and is a quick way of recycling waste too. Instead of opting for those generic brown pots, bring in old spare tires. Paint them and stuff the pot filling and Voila! A quick plant pot with a twist. Daily household items such as cans, clear glass bottles and even old chairs can serve as quick hacks- all it takes is just some creativity and paint.

3. Revamping Old Drawers

If you have an old, unused chest of drawers, then it’s time to turn them into a colorful garden planter. All you have to do is make minor changes to the drawers. First drill holes in the bottom for water drainage and coat them with weather resistant paint. Then add in different plants and flowers and then off you go- an easy upgrade. If you want to kick it up a notch, you can use these drawers and create your own mini vegetable garden. With a neat little vegetable section sitting in your backyard, you will not only add in the sustainability factor, but some fresh vegetables on your kitchen counter as well!

4. Using Mirrors

If your backyard seems tiny or you are simply looking for a way to add in some extra glam, then a quick way to tackle this issue is by putting up mirrors in the garden. Be sure to choose a mirror that does justice to your backyard. If you do, almost immediately you will get some serious satisfaction from the reflection! They not only add extra depth to your backyard but will also set the mood for those evening backyard parties.

5. Using Gravel for that Modern Chic

Gravel is low-maintenance, cheap, durable and has the ability to turn dead lawns into chic pieces of art. Don’t hesitate to plan out and create your own stone pathway, using nothing but gravel. Plus, you don’t have to mow the lawn either which is great. Paired with lush green lawns, these gravel pathways will create a modern backyard look instantly. Also, those patchy areas where the grass doesn’t seem to grow or any other area that is an eyesore can be covered up with gravel.

6. Playing with Colors

In case you feel your backyard is looking a bit too bland and green, try adding in some more color. The easiest way to do so is by implementing more color on the patio or sitting area. Pair warm, bright hues with subtle whites and beige, all  the while making sure everything compliments the lawn. Accessories like cushions, small plants and other garden decor can add extra bonus points into the whole look. And while we are talking about colors, you can paint your fence a bright, bold color for that immediate makeover.

Are you going to make any changes to your backyard this year?
