First….founder fun facts!
Founded by Walter and Kim Harper of Eagle Springs, N.C., Sittin’ Easy was born out of this desire to create and manufacture quality outdoor furniture.
Furniture that boasted durability, comfort and environmental sustainability. And might I be so bold to add….eye-popping stellar good looks?
Sittin’ Easy furniture is easy on the eyes. Classic and traditional American furniture.
Furniture to last the ages that is both enduring and endearing.
Walter Harper of Sittin’ Easy did much of his research in antique shops and museums. He discovered most furniture that had weathered that 100-year-mark outdoors were traditionally made out of white oak.
So he decided to use top-grade kiln-dried white oak as the foundation of his wood furniture. Only Appalachian white oak because it’s the most durable type of over 400 oak species.
As a teacher by trade, I appreciate a businessman who has done his homework! Harper observed no porch swings on the market that met his high standards for comfort.
So he vowed to make one…and he did! Imagine the trial and error in designs before coming up with just the right curvature for that swing?
All slats are quarter-sawn for maximum strength with minimum warping. This renders the slats flexible for comfort, yet strong and durable.
Sittin’ Easy is the original. It’s the best. The rest are just imposters!
Assembly
After watching it twice, I felt confident that assembly would be fairly easy.
Sittin’ Easy also has a renewal video to aid your understanding of the care and maintenance for their furniture.
Both are well worth watching to help you protect your investment.
Assembly was not hard since the back and seat are one solid piece. (And I do mean solid!) The only tool needed was the hex wrench that was provided. The hardware needed is included, too.
The only semi-difficult part was base assembly. We needed to make sure the strap bearing went through the front hole and was angled facing out.
One great tip on the Sittin’ Easy assembly video tells you to choose the more attractive sides, the wood piece with the prettier grain should be displayed on the outside.
Bear in mind that the assembly video is for the single high back glider, not the 4 or 5 foot gliders.
Although the concept is the same, it would be helpful for the company to put together a video specially focusing on the 4-5 gliders, too.
Last….but certainly not least, the natural wood smelled wonderful while putting this piece together!
The porch life with Sittin’ Easy….
More like the “Porch Life.”
Raise your hand if you love sitting on the porch and watching it rain? You. Right? Me too! It’s satisfying.
Simmer down while you rock back and forth on your new Sittin’ Easy glider! Newspaper and cup of tea in hand. Because let’s face it, life is hectic.
It’s slightly laughable, but like a horse, I never sit all day. Too much work to do.
Let alone relax! With 3 kids under 9 including a wild 2-year-old boy, my house is pure chaos.
It’s time to prioritize relaxation! So put your hand on your heart and repeat after me…..I vow to refresh, rejuvenate, renew, and repeat. It will elongate your life, of this I am sure!
Or at least lower your blood pressure!
There’s a reason those of us with baby experience know to gently rock babies to sleep. Back and forth rocking motion makes them happy eventually lulling them into oblivion.
You’ll get that exact same content feeling rocking or swinging on Sittin’ Easy gliders, rockers and porch swings.
The most soothing way to recharge your weary batteries!
The ethos of eco-conscious living
A big piece to the eco-friendly puzzle is sustainability. If the resources to make a great product aren’t sustainable, than the product really isn’t eco-friendly.
Hand-fashioned out of native North American Appalachian white oak, hardwood furniture crafted by Sittin’ Easy is sustainable making it environmentally sound.
White oak can be re-grown during a human lifetime as these trees grow rapidly. White oak aggressively renew themselves in the wild.
The U.S. Forest Service reports more white oaks growing now than 50 or even 100 years ago! As we look to the future, this trend is expected to continue!
Of over 400 species of oak, white oak is the only one naturally water resistant. Waterproof wood is essential when crafting outdoor furniture, especially if your pieces will be exposed to elements like rain and snow.
Since white oak is naturally decay resistant, there’s no need to treat it with toxic chemicals. Instead, the company promotes an exterior penetrating linseed oil finish.
Let me tell you….their linseed oil finish is much easier to maintain and use than surface coating finish!
And Sittin’ Easy has been going green before it became trendy to be green~ 40 years of earth-friendly furniture!
In fact, our American forefathers used Appalachian white oak for all the reasons above to makes things like barrels, wagons, fence posts, gristmill water wheels, parts of ships, tools, railroad crossties and farm machinery.
Although…I highly doubt our American ancestors gave a hoot about being eco-friendly!
Kiln-dried furniture is the key to quality….
If moisture is present in unseasoned furniture, shrinking and swelling of joints will occur, causing them to work loose and eventually come apart.
Moisture-laden furniture also tends to warp and crack. Sittin’ Easy kiln-dries their white oak to a 7-9% moisture content prior to making furniture.
This process is very expensive to do and can take almost two years to complete.
Sittin’ Easy joints do not come apart because the white oak is pre-shrunk before processing. Robust mortise and tenon joints are glued and pounded in.
Translation: Sittin’ Easy does not cut corners!
And while I’m hammering quality control, the hardware included for assembly are durable steel bolts with a yellow-zinc dichromate plated (golden) finish that lasts much longer than just plain stainless steel bolts.
So when you purchase furniture from Sittin’ Easy, I hope you’re ready for a lifetime of use. Pride of ownership. Timeless use.
Have an heir in mind, too, because you’ll be able to pass these pieces to that favorite relative or friend. Sittin’ Easy furniture is that well-made!
How’s your back? The possibility of pillows….
So strictly from a comfort stance, you won’t feel a need for either seat or back cushions to feel at ease gliding on this bench. Even if you’re plunked down for hours. Not required!
In fact, this glider is ergonomically comfortable. Okay, I stole that phrase from their pamphlet but I was determined to get all fancy for you.
But I digress.
The arch support is such that there isn’t a need for pillows or cushions. Notice I said the word need.
That’s because from an aesthetics point of view, you might want to throw on a few bright and bold pillows.
Maybe even toss on a pretty blanket or throw?
But if it’s a issue of height, or even weight for that matter, the arch support is rock solid for all.
Your back will be happy! Your butt will be happy! It’s the truth!
Indoors or out? That is the question!
My initial instincts had me positioning this lovely glider under my favorite lightly shaded Maple tree.
But I couldn’t commit. It’s such a marvelous piece that I don’t want it exposed to the elements (snow, wind, ice and rain) year-round.
Even if I did cover it with a tarp during inclement weather! The worry wort in me would loose sleep at night.
I’m still waffling on two other locations. Currently, it resides 100% protected in my sun-room. The sun naturally heats up this space; so on days that it’s still too cool to sit outside, I can glide in my sunroom. Happy bliss!
A second location I’m considering is our small, front porch. Nice to have a spot to sit a spell with friends and family for those impromptu visits.
A fairly sheltered location, the glider would stay mostly dry.
But place your new Sittin’ Easy furniture where it suits you best!
Sittin’ Easy furniture is made to last long-term, from snowy and/or rainy conditions to the dry desert. And gliding on the beach sounds magnificent to me!
After all, Sittin’ Easy furniture has been tested in all climates for over 30 years!
Maintaining your Sittin’ Easy investment!
If I do move this piece to a fully exposed location, I’ll be sure to keep a sharp eye on it annually. Within the first year I’d apply a thin coat of linseed oil.
I’d highly recommend getting a maintenance kit with your purchase for only $50. That 50 bucks buys you peace of mind that you’ll be able to take care of your furniture correctly.
The kit includes that Cabot linseed oil we’ve been talking about!
And don’t you love wood maintenance that doesn’t involve varnishes or polyurethanes that chip, peel or crack? Not to mention are toxic to inhale while working. No thanks!
Sittin’ Easy recommends this yearly cleaning and oiling to ensure decades (yes…I said decades) of use.
And Sittin’ Easy wants maintenance success for you! Not only does Sittin’ Easy describe in great detail how to care and renew their furniture, there’s a youtube video out there for all you visual learners.
Hint Hint. It’s not rocket science. It’s gonna take you 10 minutes. Bleach, dry, re-oil to original color with Cabot’s. (The oil not the cheese….bummer).
I watched their video and suggest you do as well!
Get your back behind U.S. companies!
People who work hard to support their families through grassroots efforts.
Nice people. People that you’d like to chat it up a bit with a cup of coffee. And a piece of pie. Probably two. Preferably lemon meringue.
As much as I appreciate my glider and highly recommend you getting one, too, Sittin’ Easy also manufactures swings, rockers, rocker recliners, planters, chaise loungers, tables and chairs.
Like the menu at an elegant restaurant, Sittin’ Easy offers a finite selection of outdoor furniture of the most premium quality. Fewer = Better.
Aside from the glider that you can win from this post….I’d highly recommend you checking out their 4ft. porch swing and rocker-recliner. All stellar.
So it’s more about asking yourself what outdoor furniture will immediately improve your living spaces today.
How will you invigorate your porch, patio, deck or pool right now to make it the inviting and useable area you’ve dreamed it would be?
Personally, I like how Sittin’ Easy located in Eagle Springs, NC is actually on Eagle Springs Road. Doesn’t get any more local than this, folks!
I can get behind this company. How about you?
Longing for a simpler life…
At times, I am acutely aware of how fast my kids are growing up on me. If I blink, I’m so afraid they’ll be gone.
Just the other day, I was gliding with my 9-year-old daughter and it was pure joy.
We weren’t even talking about anything in particular, just chatting. It was more about the time we were able invest in each other.
For once, instead of rushing to clean up dinner, empty the dishwasher or fold that last load of laundry, I spent time with her. It was wonderful.
While there’s nothing wrong with chairs, you don’t feel “together” as a family in a single chair.
But in a glider? There’s room for me and all three kids. And it’s fun to rock as a family!
So even though it says the 4 ft. glider is intended for two, it’s fun to squish a few more on!
I hope I never forget moments like these.
