But first….What is ECOFLEX®?
Because I’m excited to tell you about ECOFLEX®, the material this Vertical Gardening Wall by New Age Garden® is made from.
ECOFLEX® is incredible. Never heard of it? Well, it’s a blend of recycled polymers and wood byproducts.
ECOFLEX® is made by reducing clean, recycled polymers and reclaimed wood by-products from the manufacturing of hardwood (mostly poplar) furniture frames~ materials that normally would be burned or dumped into a landfill transforming them into a flour-like consistency.
Just as the name implies, ECOFLEX® is eco-friendly.
The ECOFLEX® material is then mixed with UV inhibitors and color blending compounds and granulated into a form that is used to mold the parts that are used to make an ECOFLEX® based product.
Assembly & planting advice
Give yourself about two hours to assemble the product and pick a time when you are not rushed.
Now when you see the product fully assembled it seems as if there’s no way these v-shaped slots are going to hold soil without serious spillage.
But they do! Have faith. You’ll need about two large bags of potting soil. I used Miracle-Gro.
If you cram plants in your vertical garden, you’ll need less soil and I love the fuller look.
It’s probably easiest to start planting the top row and work your way downward. You also want to put the plants with deeper roots at the top. Those with shallower roots can go toward the bottom.
If you plant deeper rooted plants at the top, you are giving those roots more space to expand and grow. This is because the seven v-shaped shelves are not closed off at any of the levels, so the roots from the top shelf can technically grow right to the bottom of the garden.
Be aware that on the bottom rows, roots will have less room to expand and grow.
This vertical garden stands tall at about 44 inches giving the roots on the very top shelf about 38 inches to grow downward. The top shelf can also accommodate larger one gallon plants.
For the remaining six shelves, I would stick to 4″ inch pots.
Also realize that the top shelf gives you lots of upright space whereas the bottom shelves are slanted, making them slightly smaller.
And if there was ever a product made for drip irrigation, it’s this one! Then you are 100 percent worry-free!
Why vertical gardening is here to stay
Living plant walls have existed since the Hanging Gardens of Babylon! So it doesn’t get any trendier than this for 2020!
Installing a humongous living green wall in your home probably isn’t a viable option due to cost and time, but a smaller vertical garden like this one from
New Age Garden® is doable. And yes, I totally get that “the great outdoors” is probably the intended purpose of this Vertical Gardening Wall.
But why not consider planting indoors? You’d have to safety attach it to the wall, but you’d want to do that anyhow whether you choose to use this product indoors or outside.
Living green art on a smaller scale. The product spans 36″ across so it could be used in smaller spaces, too.
What could be more soothing or aesthetically pleasing than plants climbing up your wall? Even apartment dwellers can get a part of the action.
Nothing can make your home look richer, more exotic and chic than beautiful plants cascading over in a green wall.
These green walls are driven by all the new technology that makes it possible to keep plants alive including LED lights and metal halide track lighting.
So will it be indoors or outside for you?
But if you’re short on space this Vertical Gardening Wall by
New Age Garden® really allows you to plant a lot more in less space.Besides, vertical gardens draw the eye upward and over. Quite aesthetically pleasing.
I’m considering using my vertical garden as a privacy fence this summer. It will be placed on my new patio to block the view.
I’m sure the neighbors will be as happy as I. No need to see me in my bathing suit.
But you place this Vertical Gardening Wall where it suits you and your needs best. It may be your new indoor living plant wall.
Or, it may become your new outdoor divider/privacy fence.
Flower, herbs, edibles….the choices are endless. What do you love to look at? What plants inspire you?
I plan on using my new ECOFLEX® Vertical Gardening Wall by New Age Garden® both indoors and out. For now, I’ll enjoy the plants as my new accent wall.
But I may be tempted in spring to take it outside for herb planting purposes. Basil I love you!
The sky is the limit. Let your creative instincts flow and grow!

The pitfalls of DIY…sometimes buying is better
The larger cake is $20 (and it’s not too big if you know what I mean.)
And who wants a smaller cake when a larger one is available?
It makes one ponder life’s choices. Should I attempt to make this vanilla bean cake?
Wandering over to the baking aisle I discovered that three tiny vanilla beans were going to cost me $11. Then I checked Amazon and saw I could get five vanilla beans for $17.50. Yikes!
That’s not even factoring in all the other ingredients I’d have to buy not to mention the investment of my time. And all the dishes to wash at the end!
Plus, if I bomb the first few attempts (likely) I’ve wasted even more money and time. I realized it would be cheaper in the long run to buy the cake and cut my losses.
Sometimes buying something outright is cheaper than trying to make it yourself.
Could you attempt to make this vertical garden yourself? Of course. But quite honestly, it’s the cake all over again.
When I added up the supplies, time, frustration (yup…gotta factor that in) it makes most sense to purchase the Vertical Gardening Wall by New Age Garden®. Besides, I don’t have access to ECOFLEX® so I’d have to buy composite. {Insert a big sigh here}.
And the cost of all the extra supplies when something doesn’t go right.
DIY is awesome. Sometimes. And other times, it’s better to treat yourself to a kit like this one from New Age Garden® and get the project done quickly.
Glorious Greenwood Nursery
If you are familiar with Buffalo, NY than you know about our crazy weather. Shipping plants like strawberries and herbs this time of year is not for the faint of heart.
The plants arrived in pristine condition~ amazing considering that our weather just dipped in temperature. I felt bad for the plants knowing they spent their holidays on a super cold truck with a driver who probably doesn’t have much plant love.
But Greenwood Nursery hailing out of Tennessee rose to the challenge. Cheryl from Greenwood Nursery is a brave soul shipping plants to Buffalo in all this snow, cold and wind.
The plants came tightly packed in newspaper and netting both of which no doubt helped them from freezing on the truck!
I shot Cheryl a picture of the vertical gardening wall and she worked like magic to fill it with the right plants. She must have had a vision in the night! Just the right amount, too.
Truly, a living green wall.
I seem to lack this gift of spacial organization! I love how she selected a variety plants, many scented like rosemary, lemon thyme, mint and lavender to give this vertical garden even more boost! It smells delicious.
But you plant what you love! Cheryl graciously selected plants not only for smell and texture but their draping ability.
I love cascading plants~ they help me relax. Agree?
So whether you are looking to add a few trees or shrubs to your yard, build up your perennials beds or simply add more groundcover to be more maintenance-free, Greenwood Nursery will have what you are looking for.
And yes, they have that kiwi plant you were seeking and didn’t find elsewhere.
But even if you don’t know what you want, that’s fine. Their customer service is so helpful. They will aid your search to locate the right plants for your space, yard and personality.
I was sent a Blue Spruce Sedum which I joyfully added to my rock garden. Cheryl also sent Grosso lavender which I can’t wait to use for wreath-making in spring. I wish you could get a whiff of this plant with me, intoxicating!
One of the strawberry plants had a tiny strawberry still attached. In December. In Buffalo, NY! Oh joy of joys.
When June finally arrives, I will have to share pictures of my newly formed strawberry raised bed when the berries form and ripen.
Not to mention the wonderful scented rosemary plants Cheryl included. Confession time: I used some stems in my beef stew and on my roasted potatoes. Herbs always make me so hungry.
And that Woolly Thyme. Holy moly. I’ve never seen woolly thyme in any of the local garden centers even in spring. That’s the power of ordering from an online nursery.
Selection is supreme.
You will love the Little Bunny Miniature Fountain Grass. Grasses are incredible and addicting once you start to grow them. They add height and interest to any garden bed.
But it was their Tater Tot Thuja evergreen shrub that stole my heart. Shrubs don’t get any cuter or softer than this diminutive beauty.
Final thoughts…
If it’s annuals you love, go for it. Lots of petunias and impatiens for a vibrantly colored garden. Herbs? Equally compelling for scent and cooking.
In fact, this whole planter could be your new strawberry bed. Imagine that? Strawberries draping over ripe to the taste. Yum!
But if it’s spiky plants you adore, those work too. Or succulents. Indoors plants or ones that could become indoor plants. After all, I winterize my rosemary each year.
Vertical growing plants for looks and life.
If you love plants like I do (and since you are blog reader I would wager that is the case) than you will enjoy this lovely Vertical Gardening Wall year-round.
Fingers crossed that YOU win!!
