No more excuses.
This is the year we create the ideal habitat to attract your favorite backyard birds. Whether that’s orioles, catbirds, titmice, chickadees, nuthatches, cardinals, blue jays or whatever flutters around your neighborhood!
A bird feeder is like a window to the natural world. It gives you a chance to delight in the silliness and beauty of birds for hours of joy.
Best of all, anyone from 3 to 103 can do it! I mean how hard is it to fill a feeder? Nothing easier!
Let’s get those adorable hummingbirds buzzing around because they do need to eat every 10 minutes!
Even if you live in an apartment, you can still get the thrill with the magnificent Desert Steel bird feeders that fit anywhere, even in smaller spaces. A patio or small balcony is perfect!
I am so thrilled for the 3 separate winners who get either the Fushsia, Magnolia or Purple Prince Bird Feeders from Desert Steel! ARV $50!!!
How to enter to WIN!!!
Simply fill out the SweepWidget Form at the very bottom of this post! The email put on the form is the one I will use to contact you if you win!

Bold, bright and beautiful colors with Desert Steel!
Desert Steel did their homework on the vibrant shades of these feeders. While the majority of birds love red, hummingbirds in particular are drawn to red flowers and feeders in particular.
What other colors do hummingbirds swarm over? You guessed it. Pink fuchsia with purple. (I researched this!!) So the stem of the Desert Steel flower feeder is pink, and the nectar bottle is red luring those adorable hummingbirds in!
A big plus is the tubular shape of the Desert Steel fuchsia feeder! The hummingbirds spot this boldly colored tubular flower feeder from great distances and rush over to investigate. It’s exciting! Your heart will beat a little faster when 3 or 4 hummingbirds are circling your Desert Steel feeder vying for food.
And while hummingbirds also love purple, butterflies also flutter for it! Add a few orange slices in your feeder to draw in the butterflies. Orange and apple slices will also attract orioles and catbirds.
As a side note, I don’t typically mix seed with fruit because I don’t want to make my seed mold.
Lastly, what surprised me the most was learning that birds actually like white!
So another idea to inspire you is placing a white birdhouse next to or near your new bird feeders. Why make them work hard? Food, shelter and water all in the same place.

13 jaw-dropping facts about hummingbirds!
- Hummingbirds weigh 1/10 ounce — the weight of a penny
- While resting, the average 4-inch hummingbird takes about 150 breaths per minute
- A hummingbird uses its tongue which functions as a tiny pump, to suck the sought-after sweet liquid from feeders and flowers
- Their legs are underdeveloped so they are unable to walk
- Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backward. Their wings move in a figure-eight pattern, which allows them to maneuver with ease.
- The mother weighs only about 8 times more than her egg
- Hummingbirds can be very territorial and will try to protect their food sources-both flowers and feeders. They spend a lot of time chasing each other away! So bad!
- They generally lay 2 eggs about the size of a blueberry
- They use spider webs as glue to attach the nest to a tree branch as well as a binding agent for the building materials.
- It takes less than a week (about 5-7 days) for a hummingbird to build its nest. Built by females only (go figure) aside from the biding spider webs nests are made of lichen and moss.
- Hummingbirds eat about every 10 minutes
- Hummingbirds beat their wings more than 50 times per second!
- Hummingbirds are solitary migrants, so you own’t see them traveling in flocks. Wintering grounds are by species, but most ruby-throats spend the cold months between southern Mexico and northern Panama!

Products specs of the Fuchsia Hummingbird Feeder & cleaning tips!
- Easy clean, easy fill bottle
- 8 oz nectar bottle
- UV/fade resistant
- Rust proof
- Stem and chain included
- Easy assembly
12”W x 18”H
Note: To prevent leaking, squeeze excess air out of bottle, then place and tighten cap. Turn the bottle upside down. The bottle may drip for a little, but will soon create a suction seal.
My favorite feature of the fuchsia hummingbird feeder (aside from being so sturdy and attractive) is the ease of cleaning it.
Seed and suet feeders need to be cleaned every two weeks. Hummingbird feeders like this fuchsia one need to be cleaned more often, at least once a week. In hot and humid weather clean every few days. Let’s keep our feathered friends fed and safe!
Red dye is an absolute no-no. (I used to add red-dye, too so don’t feel guilty). Red-dye is not only unnecessary, but could actually harm hummingbirds.
Most people do 4 cups water to 1 cup sugar, but I spoil my hummingbirds and do 3 cups water to 1 cup sugar! I double this “recipe” and store the extra in a sterilized empty milk container in my fridge.
Boil water to remove impurities, add sugar, stir well and cool completely. Never add honey or other ingredients. Then fill your feeders and let the joy begin!

5 ways to attracts birds to an apartment balcony or patio!
1.) Focus on containers. Many colorful perennials and annuals like alliums, black-eyed Susans, marigolds and sunflowers that attract wildlife in larger yards are well-suited for planters and pots on a balcony.
2.) Not only does container gardening create a little privacy for you, but they make birds feel safe and therefore more likely to explore your patio.
3.) Add vertical interest to your balcony or patio and entice feathered friends with cardinal vines, honeysuckle vines, climbing nasturtiums and morning glory flowers. Features like trellises, window boxes and flat-backed hanging planters make a big splash.
4.) Set out your Desert Steel bird feeders next to a small birdbath. Make sure the basin isn’t too deep. If your birdbath is more than 2 inches deep, add a layer of pea gravel to the bottom.
5.) Experiment with a variety of seeds, jelly, fruit and nuts and even mealworms if you want to attract a variety of birds. Three staples are Black oil sunflower, white millet and thistle (Nyjer) seed for those goldfinches. Have suet to lure woodpeckers and peanuts to entice titmice, chickadees and nuthatches.
As a side note, these feeders hold 12 ounces of seed~ that’s an ideal amount! I love the way the seed naturally flows out of the white magnolia feeder!

Desert Steel for the win!
How I love Desert Steel. The quality, the color, the pizzazz. They always pick the right flower in exactly the right shade. Nailed it!
And so well-made. I don’t like flimsy steel and neither do you. Cheap garden products. I’ll pass!
Desert Steel never skimps on solid materials to handcraft their products. So be prepared to be filling their feeders in 15 years because you’ll still have them.
In fact, I’ve noticed that even those pesky squirrels have failed to break their feeders as they have done to plastic feeders I’ve had in the past.
I hang my feeders on shepherd’s hooks and that has worked for me! Not only does this look great but keeps my feeders in the exact location I want so I can watch the birds~ outside my kitchen window!
Everyone wants a bird feeder! You can’t go wrong with Desert Steel bird feeders. End of the year teacher gifts? This is it!
If you are feeling generous this year, throw in a Desert Steel solar light or two to really spoil those needing a gift in life now.
Trust me…they deserve it! Until then, I hope you WIN!!! There are 3 winners after all!
I love their products and they have outdone themselves with this range.

I found the facts about hummingbirds interesting. I just boiled up another batch of sugar water. My feeder is very traditional and most the yellow plastic flowers around the sippy holes are broken. It still works though.

I was unable to find the original page link to like on your Facebook page today (6/17/22) for the Desert Steel Bird Feeders, so I shared this page’s link. It had the information & the bird feeder prizes/link showing under a rather nondescript picture. Lightening hit today & our computer service was down for a short time, so I don’t know if the lightening jumbled the graphics. Until the bird feeder link reappears, I’m unable to formally like it.
