I’m a frugal gal. And there are few pleasures in life that I deem worthy of a splurge; but stellar shampoo, great chocolate and a few fabulous knives are three of them. At our house, we eat tons of vegetables and I bet you do too. The latest stats suggest that we need to be eating a whopping ten servings of veggies per day for optimal health. Ten! But prep work is real work that takes up serious amounts of time. Use the wrong knife and you’ll waste endless hours hacking away at your winter squash in frustration, or worse, put a gash in your finger. You need the right tools for the job. So if you haven’t met WÜSTHOF then it’s time you did. Confession, I only own two of their knives, a vegetable and a paring knife. They are the only ones I ever lay my hands on when food prepping. Ever. Like the perfect pen in the hand is a WÜSTHOF knife to the touch. Ideal. This is why I’m thrilled to have teamed up with them and for your chance to win one of their stupendous knives (8″ Vegetable Knife – 4563-7/20) valued at $170! To enter, like the Raise Your Garden Facebook page and share this post or sign up for our newsletter. For two entries, do both. SOMETHING NEW FOR SPRING! YOU CAN EARN ONE ENTRY PER DAY JUST BY SHARING THIS POST! Let us know that you have entered by telling us anything about your food prep routine!
Classic WUSTHOF knife

What’s so special about this CLASSIC WÜSTHOF knife?

The holes. Hands down! These unique holes help prevent wet and starchy foods from sticking to the blade. You already know how annoying and frustrating it is when foods stick to the knife you’re working with.

Here are the knife specs…

  • Precision-forged from a single blank of high carbon stainless steel.
  • Full tang that is triple riveted to the handle for precise control.
  • Precision Edge Technology (PEtec) yields a blade that is 20% sharper with twice the edge retention.
  • Tempered to 58⁰ Rockwell.
  • Comfortable and highly-durable polyoxymethylene (POM) handle with a traditional look and feel, stickered with our red Trident logo. The (POM) handle has a tighter molecular structure to resist fading and discoloration.
  • Full bolster and finger guard.

How I met WÜSTHOF

When I got married, I bought myself two WÜSTHOF knifes. A vegetable and a paring knife. And here I am ten years later still using those knives and grasp for none others. This isn’t a company or a product that I’ve been testing for just a few weeks. These are knives that I have invested many years in and still cherish. Heirloom knives that I will surely pass down to my kids.

Did you know? In home kitchens, 52% of fruits and vegetables get wasted because they’re perishable and are not convenient to prep or cook! Let’s change that with WÜSTHOF!

Why are good knives critical for cutting success?

Using a dull knife is just like using a dull razor. You’re more likely, not less likely to cut yourself badly if it’s not sharp enough. This is because you have to push harder on it to make it work. Cutting onions and pineapples used to be such a chore for me. A real pain. I was using the wrong tools….dull, lackluster knives.

So I’d hack away at my produce, nicking my poor fingers in the process. My new CLASSIC WÜSTHOF knife is wonderful, just as I expected it would be. It slices through my fruits and veggies like a dream and helps me attain that ten a day quota.

In fact, the more I use this knife, the more I like it. Experimenting has been fun! Well, as fun as kitchen prep work can be. Those holes along the blade….I’m telling you, it’s the key to success.

Foods I’ve happily chopped with my WÜSTHOF

  • Carrots
  • Onions
  • Pineapple
  • Cantaloupe
  • Yams
  • Broccoli
  • Winter squash
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Melons
  • Peppers
  • Potatoes
  • Eggplant

~Ever notice that some foods are more difficult than others to chop? And you dread cutting them with that dull and crappy knife of yours? In fact, you dread just thinking about cutting them. So rather than face that pineapple you let it rot on the countertop. It finally gets chucked in the compost bin. What a waste! With WÜSTHOF that problem is gone today. This knife will motivate you to get the job done!

Knife Tips

When I bought my WÜSTHOF knives ten years ago, I purchased them at a local gourmet store. A WÜSTHOF representative was brought in to teach us about knives. It was quite refreshing as eating at Applebees every night wasn’t an option after I got married. We had a wedding and house to save for! Here’s what I learned at that presentation and other info I have gleaned since:

  • Treat your knives well. Use them only for the purpose in which they were intended. Meaning, you don’t use your bread knife to carve your turkey, or worse, as scissors to remove the tape off your latest Amazon arrival. (While we’re on the topic of Amazon, they are NOT an authorized dealer for WÜSTHOF so avoid purchasing this product from them.)
  • Always use your knives on a firm surface such as a wooden, bamboo, or polyethylene cutting board.
  • Wash your knives immediately each and every time after use with dishwashing soap. Then dry thoroughly with a lint-free cloth before storing. (They say on their website that their knives can be put in the dishwasher…but I’ve never been able to do it.)
  • Speaking of storing, I have both a knife block and the magnetic holder. I love love love the space saving magnetic holder, wow, it makes life simpler.
  • Knives need to be sharpened. I purchased a hand-held WÜSTHOF sharpener when I bought the 2-piece classic and paring set. Every 2-3 years, I take my knives to a professional to have them sharpened. This keeps them in pristine condition.

My last epiphany…

Tell me that you can relate to this scenario. So you buy an item such as a garbage can. And it works. It’s functional and overall you are pleased with the brand. But when it comes time to replace the garbage can, you try a different brand. Maybe it’s just my sense that “the grass is always greener….”

But once I tried a WÜSTHOF knife, I’ve never been tempted in the past ten years to try or use any other brand of knife. And why would I be? They work like a dream and make my life easier. This is why I’m so loyal. You might have guessed by now that I come from a long line of  WÜSTHOF fans. Would you believe me if I told you how many WÜSTHOF knives my mom owns? Probably not!
