A bit about Backyard Boxes…
Backyard Boxes is a USA company through and through- handmade products in a workshop in Denver, Colorado. It’s like your woodworking tech friend from high school created this garden personally, just for you.
And let me remind you that when you support USA businesses, you are helping us all thrive. People with kids and families, like you and I. So make sure you follow them on Instagram. Okay?
A company that doesn’t skimp or cut corners when making your garden box. Backyard Boxes for the win. Even the hardware is awesome.
These beauties are formed out of untreated cedar. Remember Solomon from the Bible? The wisest man ever. Right. He built his temple from cedar wood because it was the best then and it’s still the best now.
Phoenicians have sailed across the world using ships built from cedar wood. Best. Wood. Ever.
Big bonus. Untreated cedar means no nasty chemicals leaching into your soil for a 100% organic garden.
Ditto on the stains Backyard Boxes uses. I counted 14 non-toxic stain selections. Again. Super important as you wouldn’t want a stain leaching into your soil. Backyard Boxes thinks of everything!

A bit more about Backyard Boxes…
There are lots of garden boxes and elevated boxes on the market. Many if not most are cheaply made and will show wear and tear quickly.
But no one is ever disappointed in a garden box made out of dried cedar. Not now, not 20 years down the road. Cedar wood is both rot and bug-resistant.
Equally thrilling is the workmanship of these brilliant boxes. Each planter box is started with an external frame made from 2″ and 4” lumber creating a sturdy support structure for the box.
This frame is strong and wide enough to sit on while gardening. And thicker lumber lasts longer.
To create sides, they insert 1″ thick boards into the frame. This increases stability and support against outward soil pressure. Each board overlaps each other to lock all pieces into place with minimal hardware, cutting down on assembly time for the purchaser (you!)
I can attest to the importance of inserting thick boards into the frame or the sides will bulge.
Tom made me three raised beds and put in a few boards, but not enough. The beds are now bulging a bit with the soil pressure. To answer your question: yes…I do have weeds growing out of the side of my boxes.
Avoid this problem by buying from Backyard Boxes!

The assembly process of Backyard Boxes
Unless you live close to Denver, Colorado, you’ll be assembling your garden box.
The biggest challenge is picking the right spot as you’ll unlikely move this garden box. Select a location that gets 8 hours of sun and is not far from a water source.
When you open the box, the most surprising fact is that there are few parts for assembly. Fewer parts but all are of high quality. I think it’s the fewest parts of any garden kit I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot.
Note to self: assembly is going to be easy.
And it was! Easy peasy assembly done in less than 10 minutes. Quote from Tom “That was the easiest product assembly you have ever had me do.” Firm praise, right?
This is partly because Backyard Boxes’ Raised beds ship with four assembled sides. Customers can easily attach all four sides using the provided bolts and a 7/16 socket wrench (not provided).
Once assembled, place your Raised Garden Box on a flat, level surface and fill it with soil. Done!

All eyes are on this “customizable” surprise!
With over 40+ variations, Backyard Boxes are fully customizable. Get your exact size for planting perfection.
Backyard Boxes raised beds come in three heights: 10″, 16″ and 23″. They make them in 2, 3, and 4-foot widths, offering lengths between 2-10 feet on their website. If you have something else in mind, I’d email them using the contact page!
Ordering is easy. First, determine your garden style. Raised garden bed, elevated planter, or garden box?
There are pros to each. And each boasts a unique look and style. The biggest asset of the raised garden box is versatility. It’s simple to customize the precise layout you require.
This raised bed has an open bottom, and deep-rooted plants (tomatoes) can find their way down.
The elevated garden box is great for those who prefer not to bend over. Achy, sore back? This is the one. Standing tall at 30″ total height, you can choose either a 10″ or 16″ planting depth. The bottom is closed.
The elevated garden box even has a liner to retain soil! The wooden bottom with gaps for drainage is spot-on so plants don’t get waterlogged. And…drum roll, please. The elevated garden box swoons with chic style.
The planter box is the ideal choice for the patio, porch, or poolside. Fill with colorful annuals or hydrangeas and let the beauty of summer begin! Choose either a 19″ or 26″ box height with 16″ or 23″ planting depth.
But do yourself a favor and order two, I get all “all weird” about having just one box which seems off-balanced. And it will be sad all alone.

A dedicated place to garden
Anyone can have a garden. Right? Dig a hole in the soil. Plant in full sun. Water. Done. But is it that easy?
Where I live, we have clay soil. Plants grow so-so in this type of environment. Some never thrive.
When you plant in a hand-fashioned Backyard Boxes raised garden or elevated garden box- you get to create just the right environment for your plants.
Translation: put in the right soil and nutrients for your plants. I like to line the bottom of such a box with compost, followed by a mix of potting and garden soil.
Equally nice is having a dedicated spot to grow a garden. One year, Tom weed-whacked some of my tomatoes.
He thought my tomatoes were overgrown weeds. I was not happy! A garden box is like a flashing sign that says, “This is my garden…let it be”.
How about a raised garden bed for veggies, an elevated garden box for herbs, and a garden box for flowers?
And no one makes cedar garden boxes as attractive and aesthetically pleasing as Backyard Boxes. It will become the focal point of your yard. Modern farmhouse appeal- can’t beat it.

Big pros to garden boxes from Backyard Boxes
I appreciate garden boxes because they require less bending over. And if you order an elevated garden box, there’s zero bending over. As I get (ahem) older, lower back pain is for real.
Garden boxes are equally compelling as you control the environment including the soil, compost, and other amendments.
But I also like garden boxes because I’ve discovered you can plant closer together than just in the ground.
Especially, if you provide trellises for the plants to grow upward. But even if you don’t use a trellis, plants don’t mind being planted closer in a garden box and look majestic sweeping over the side of the box.
Garden boxes never cramp your style. They look fabulous no matter where you place them and are convenient even for people with smallish yards.
As homeowners, most of us now want the outside of our homes to look just as nice as the inside. Wood garden boxes from Backyard Boxes will get you on the right path.
You can’t go wrong with whatever size you choose, all will look sharp and function even better.
Old and young alike, big or small yard, Backyard Boxes for the win.

I could really use this!!! Where I’m at on the coast tomatoes do much better in raised beds like this and this one is really attractive, not to mention it’s much easier tending to stuff when you don’t have to bend over so much, like you said, getting older and lower back pain is not fun…. LOL.
